Half Marathon Musings

It seems the first months of 2007 will bring us mainly half marathon runs and training: January Manhattan half, February Bronx and March probably Brooklyn. A lot has been written on our forum on when, what, and how.

There is also a posting for people wanting to start form scratch.

If you post on the forum, or reply to a post, please try to put a meaningful summary of your posting in the subject, as most people skim the titles before reading.

Peter Rabbit

The Peter Rabbit Cross Country was run on Sunday, December 3, a bright, unseasonably mild day in Prospect Park. The course was 2 loops around the fields, starting at 15th street and continuing up to Grand Army Plaza following a marked trail that seemed to follow every hill in the park and covered approximately 3 miles. Awards were given to the first 15 male and first 15 female finishers and a postrace celebration of bagels was enjoyed at the Knights of Columbus hall. Look for another cross country race in late march, but don't forget the New Year's Run on 12/31 and the Valentine's Day 5k on 2/11.

Upcoming Local Races and events

December 3, Peter Rabbit 3 Mile Cross Country Race - Prospect Park 10:00AM. Registration online at www.active.com or the morning of the race at the Knight's of Columbus, 10th Avenue and PPSW.

Results of the Team Championship on line

Another sterling showing of the Brooklyn Road Runners. Find the detailed results on our races page

Thank you to John Shostrom for making sure at least 10 men showed up for todays race!

Apart from the champions, we must also give a special mention to Fatima and Saad who ran their first race at the NYRR defending our team.

A HUGE thank-you to Andrei Lioshyn who took the train all the way from Trenton, NJ to join us this morning.

We also welcome back Inkul (Brown) Yoo to BRRC. His history goes back many years when he ran with us consistently, but he has spent the last couple of years with the Korean Road Runners. We hope he stays with us this time! Brown, along with running legend John Shostrom, club President Stephen Bonal, and local artist Charlie Hanley carried our mens 50+ team to a stellar fourth place finish, besting nearly every large team in New York City.

See our complete team results below, just underneath a picture of me taken at today's race (I'm really not that narcissistic, but this happens to be the only photo of BRRC currently available over at the official race write-up).

Racing and training this week-end (19-20 August)

There will be no training run on Saturday, as we will be all out at the race. (please join us, even if it is only for the photo)

On Sunday, there will be a training run at the usual place and time.

Team championship

NYRRC website This Saturday, Aug. 19, the NYRR Team Championship will be held in Central Park, starting on the 102nd Street transverse.

The men's race will start at 8 a.m., and the women's race will follow at 9 a.m. BRRC needs 10 men and five women to field an official team. The race is always the fastest and most exciting of the year, and it's the cheapest, too! It's only $7 if you sign up before the race.

Also, team pictures are taken at the race, and if we have a good turnout, we'll probably get our picture in New York Runner, the NYRR's magazine.

If you need a ride to the race, contact Steve Bonal at 917-238-9447 or John Shostrom at 718-469-0589.

More Marathon preparation Saturday, August 5th

Remember: the long run is essential to Marathon preparation.

If anyone is interested in a long run Saturday
morning, Elias and Brent are leaving at 8 AM from the
“usual” Saturday morning location - PPW and 15th St
(Circles). (8-8:30 mpm)

We'll be running down to Red Hook, looping back up to
Prospect Park (it's about a ten mile loop), then doing
some mileage in the shade of the park once it begins
to heat up.

We'd love to have company if anyone is interested and
doesn't want to trek into Manhattan for the organized
20 miler NYRR is doing in CP.

Another group will be running with this NYRRC long run, starting at 7:00 am in Central Park. This run has different speed groups (7-11 mpm I think)

Please come to the training to be ready.

Mets run to home plate reminder!

This is a club scored race. Don't forget to mark down
BRRC. Also, entry in limited to 2,500 runners and

Especially our women should participate. We have a team now, don't let us down.

If the Mets win the world serious this year (hey
they're in first place dammit) wouldn't you love to
say, hey, I crossed the same home plate as Julio
Franco or Carlos Beltran? GO METS! F the Yankees.

Start of the Brooklyn Road Runners Marathon Preparation Program:

At 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 5, at the Knights of Columbus hall (10th Avenue and Prospect Park Southwest), Dr. Riccardo Bianchi and I will be giving a presentation and discussion on marathon training.

Riccardo, a longtime BRRC member and perennial sub-3-hour marathoner, is a professor of physiology and pharmacology (insert EPO/steroid joke here) at Downstate Medical Center. He's a lifelong endurance athlete, focusing first on cycling and then on running. He knows training and the science behind the training.

I, on the other hand, haven't taken a biology course since freshman year of high school, which was an extremely long time ago. Unlike Riccardo, I've been lucky enough to avoid injuries, so I've run about 25 marathons over the last dozen years. For my part of the talk, I'll add a little of my trial-and-error experience.

We will answer as many questions as we can. There's a saying in running that every runner is “an experiment of one,” so Riccardo and I hope that those who come will share their knowledge as well as their questions.

Hope to see many of you on July 5.- John
